We offer state-of-the-art treatments including minimally-invasive and single-incision laparoscopic techniques (SILS), and the latest in robotic surgery. Timothy R. Rasmusson, MD, FACS
Dr. Rasmusson specializes in general and laparoscopic surgery, as well as Spinal Exposure surgery in collaboration with local Spinal Surgeons. He is one of the most well-respected spinal exposure surgeons in the country. Upon graduating from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine, Dr. Rasmusson completed his resident training at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He's practiced with Surgical Associates for over 25 years and sees patients at our West Seneca location.
Rurik C. Johnson, MD, FACS
Dr. Johnson is a general and advanced laparoscopic surgeon. He is adept in single incision “scar-less” laparoscopic surgery (SILS), as well as ultrasound guided breast biopsy, breast surgery, robotic surgery, and all types of general surgery. He is a graduate from Colgate University and the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine. Dr. Johnson practices in our West Seneca and Derby offices.
Richard D. Bloomberg, MD, FACS, FRCSC
Dr. Bloomberg is a general and fellowship-trained advanced laparoscopic surgeon. He specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques for diseases of the gallbladder, appendix, intestines, spleen, adrenals, and all types of hernias. Dr. Bloomberg is also certified to use the da Vinci Surgical Robot, performing various robotic procedures including single-site “scarless” cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). Additionally, he is one of the only physicians in Western New York to offer an in-office painless, “laser” procedure for the treatment of hemorrhoids.
Dr. Bloomberg completed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City after finishing a general surgery residency at University of Toronto Hospitals. He earned his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Dr. Bloomberg is board certified in general surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In addition, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He is a member of several professional organizations, including:

Robert S. Armstrong, MD
Dr. Armstrong is a fully trained general surgeon with extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. He joined Surgical Associates of Western NY after completing his General Surgery residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. He received his medical degree from the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton. During residency, Dr. Armstrong trained with some of the leading practitioners of massive ventral hernia repairs. With Surgical Associates of Western NY, he performs a broad scope of general surgery, including but not limited to: Laparoscopic and open hernia repairs, Laparoscopic colon resections, and Laparoscopic solid organ surgery of the adrenal glands, spleen, pancreas and liver. A native of Cleveland, Dr. Armstrong is excited to be part of the Western New York medical community and is accepting new patients through the West Seneca Office.
Kenneth H. Eckhert III, MD, FACS
Dr. Eckhert is a fellowship-trained general surgeon, specializing in advanced laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, and the Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILSTM) technique. Using these minimally invasive practices, Dr. Eckhert performs surgeries to treat upper gastrointestinal issues, hernias, and diseases of organs such as the colon, spleen, gallbladder and appendix.
In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Eckhert plays an important leadership role both at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and in the field of surgery. He is the Chairman of the Robotic Surgical Committee, Associate Chairman of Surgery at Mercy Hospital, and Vice President of Medical Staff for the Catholic Health System. He also donates his time and expertise as president and lead surgeon for Friends of Good Samaritan, a non-profit organization that provides medical care in Haiti. Dr. Eckhert makes annual trips, along with other physicians and nurses, to perform surgery for those in need.
Dr. Eckhert completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at Albany Medical Center. Prior to that, he earned his medical degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland Medical School and his undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton.

Michael P. Rade, MD, FACS
Dr. Rade is an accomplished and respected general surgeon who has served the Buffalo area for more than thirty years. He is currently the Chairman of Surgery at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, and his practice areas include general, laparoscopic and vascular surgery. In his capacity as chair, he not only performs surgery but also oversees all surgical staff and the surgical ICU.
In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Rade is an active member in many professional societies. He currently serves as the Chair of the Local Committee on Applicants for the American College of Surgeons and has previously been its WNY Chapter President. During his career, he has also held the role of president for the Buffalo Surgical Society, the Buffalo Vascular Society, and the Buffalo Trauma Society.
Dr. Rade completed his general surgery residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. He also completed a fellowship in traumatology at the Medical Center in Hannover, Germany. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Buffalo and his undergraduate degree from Williams College.
He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Dr. Rade is also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from ACS. Dr. Rade holds positions in several academic and professional organizations, including:

Karee A. Chella, ANP, RNFA
Ms. Chella is an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) and Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA). Her education and experience allow her to assist during surgery and help manage in-patients at Mercy Hospital. With her conscientious approach to care and constant communication with the surgeons, our patients enjoy a continuity of care that aids in recovery.
Ms. Chella holds a Master of Science as an Adult Nurse Practitioner from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She also received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UB and is a member of the Nurse Practitioner Association.

Briana R. Kelley, RPA-C
Ms. Kelley is a Physician Assistant (RPA-C). She works closely with our team of surgeons to coordinate and manage all aspects of patient care. Daily responsibilities include pre- and post-operative care, rounding, discharge plans, and first assisting in general surgery operations. By working in concert with Karee Chella, ANP-BC, RNFA, she provides continuity of care to our patients.
Ms. Kelley holds a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Daemen College. She also received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Western New York Physician Assistant Association.
She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCPPA). Ms. Kelley sees patients at Mercy Hospital.
